Project: Spoken word recognition by Dutch-English bilingualsMore than half of the world’s population can speak and understand more than one language. However, to date there have been only a handful of studies on the processing of speech by bilinguals. The recent upsurge of interest in bilingual research has focussed almost exclusively on the visual modality. This project aims to fill the gaps with respect to bilingual spoken word recognition by empirically addressing two fundamental questions. First, the project aims to determine the basic characteristics of the bilingual auditory word recognition system. For example, how do properties of stimulus words such as interlingual similarity and relative frequency affect lexical processing by bilinguals? Second, the project attempts to find out in detail how properties of spoken word stimuli in the second language interact with the level of proficiency of bilinguals with that L2. The majority of the experiments will make use of established reaction time techniques such as (primed) lexical decision and language decision. One or more experiments will be supplemented by fMRI measurements. People involved in this project
