Division of Cognitive Artificial IntelligenceCognitive Artificial Intelligence recently emerged as a discipline that integrates aspects of computer science and psychology to improve people's interaction with complex machines. At the NICI this is practiced as the study of cognitive models from the perspectives of human factors and artificial intelligence. The aim is to prepare for the future of user-centered computing environments. Human factors research aims primarily at understanding and modeling cognitive processes for the design of task environments, the construction of normative models for man-machine interaction and the engineering of human cognition, as in the acquisition of skills. In artificial intelligence, computational models are designed for the development and evaluation of intelligent information processing systems that enhance multi-modal communication and cooperation among human agents and their artificial counterparts. Current research studies information filtering on the world-wide web, pen&speech dialog systems, handwriting recognition and forensic document examination, and image-based search.
